FAQ’s
PAYE Tax Refunds
PAYE stands for Pay As You Earn. Your employer deducts income tax from your salary before you receive it, and sends it to HMRC on your behalf.
Paying tax by PAYE doesn’t guarantee you’ve paid the right amount, so you should ALWAYS check your payslips. Millions of pounds of overpaid tax sits unclaimed in HMRC accounts.
What can you claim for?
You could be able to claim some tax back for up to four years, if you’ve paid for things essential to your job, like:
- Clothing and tools
- Mileage and travel
- Professional fees and subscriptions
- Meals and accommodation.
Claiming your PAYE tax refund
Claiming tax refunds and expenses can be very complicated and time-consuming. That’s what our specialist team at Elite Tax Professionals are here for – we take away all the time and stress.
We prepare your claim for you, send it to HMRC, and chase it until you get your money back.
Self Assessment Refunds
We can review your tax return to check if you’ve paid too much tax and help you process your claim.
What can you claim for?
You might be able to claim for expenses you’ve incurred if they’re only related to your business. These can include costs for:
- Sales, like products to resell or raw goods for production
- Staff, like salaries, uniforms
- Premises, like business rates, certain costs for working from home
- Repair and maintenance of equipment
- Admin, like business insurance, software, training
- Finance, like bank charges.
Claiming your self assessment refund
We’ll take away all the hassle and stress of submitting your self assessment. We’ll discuss your circumstances and let you know what documents we need. Once we have all the information, we’ll calculate your expenses and file your assessment for you.
CIS Tax Refunds
Many workers in the construction industry qualify for a tax refund – the average CIS claim totals over £2,000. We can take care of filing your CIS self assessment tax returns and claim your money back.
What can you claim for?
It’s important to think what you spend your money on, while you’re doing your job.
These costs can include:
- Parking fees and tolls
- Home office bills, like phone use, postage and stationery
- Meals while you’re working or on the road
- Travel costs (mileage or public transport)
- Accommodation if you need to stay overnight while working
- Upkeep and replacement of any essential tools or personal protective equipment
- Public liability insurance and fees to professional bodies
VAT Refunds
If you’re self-employed, a sole trader or a limited company and you’re not already VAT registered, you could be eligible for a VAT refund.
You need to keep records of all sales and purchases, as well as VAT invoices and receipts. We’ll let you know what we need to see, so we can check if you’re eligible.
Are you eligible?
You’re eligible if you:
- Are self-employed
- Are a limited company contractor
- Have a turnover under £150,000
- Pay VAT on goods and services bought for your business
- Have VAT receipts showing what you’ve bought
What can you claim for?
You might be able to claim a VAT refund on assets bought for your business in the last four years.
We can check if you can claim for assets worth £2,000 or more (including VAT).
If you haven’t been registered for VAT before, you can claim for assets bought in the last four years in your first VAT return – even if they’re worth less than £2,000 including VAT.
You might also be able to claim the VAT costs for fuel and business vehicles. This includes owned, leased, commercial and self-drive hire vehicles.
If you have ‘dual purpose’ items (meaning they’re used for both personal and business reasons), you can claim the percentage used for business purposes.
